Welcome to United States History 1 Advanced Placement

The Advanced Placement program requires more effort than the usual high school course. The work you are expected to complete is college level work. Your workload will be heavy and the expectations I have for you are high. The first goal of the AP program is to insure that you have a good understanding of the history of the United States. The second goal is to prepare you for the Educational Testing Service's AP exam. This exam is a rigorous 3 hour test taken in May of your junior year. Most colleges and universities grant credit for scores of 3,4, or 5. It is important to note that in order to gain AP credits on your transcripts, you must take the AP Exam.  For these reasons, expect an intense year of US History 1AP.

Through this course we will study American History in an exciting and intensive manner. We will look deeply into history's events and consider them from a variety of perspectives. I look forward to a great year.

Please make good use of this website. I will post syllabi, homework, papers, class notes and announcements. Also you can e-mail me from here. I will not accept any late work so if you are absent, this website can be a lifesaver.

----------------------------------------------------------

We will be using a variety of sources, both primary and secondary, considering many different perspectives. Our main texts however will be the following:

  1. Bailey, Thomas A., The American Pageant: A History of the Republic (it may be a good idea to purchase the accompanying guidebook for extra help following the text)

  2. Tindall & Shi, America: A Narrative History

  3. Zinn, Howard, A People's History of the United States, Abridged Teaching Edition

The Concord Hymn
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1837)

By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to April's breeze unfurled;
Here once the embattled farmers stood;
And fired the shot heard round the world.

The foe long since in silence slept;
Alike the conqueror silent sleeps,
And Time the ruined bridge has swept
Down the dark stream that seaward creeps.

On this green bank, by this soft stream,
We place with joy a votive stone,
That memory may their deeds redeem,
When, like our sires, our sons are gone.

O Thou who made those heroes dare
To die, and leave their children free, --
Bid Time and Nature gently spare
The shaft we raised to them and Thee.

Shot heard 'round the World!
